Every room needs light, and so lamps are pretty much a necessity for everyone. But just because it’s a necessity doesn’t mean it needs to be boring!

There are all kinds of quirky and adorable lamps out there, but there’s no need to drop a bunch of money on one when you can make one yourself.

This pineapple-shaped lamp is lightweight and durable, and is made of everyday materials you might already have. And since it’s cheap and safe, it’s great for a kid’s room.

Fun fact: a pineapple is a symbol of hospitality, and can even be used to illustrate some life lessons, so it’s perfect for the home! Here’s how to make one yourself:

Materials:

• 1 package plastic spoons
• 1 empty plastic bottle, cleaned
• X-Acto knife
• 1 small lamp base
• green cardstock
• yellow paint
• paintbrush
• hot glue gun and glue
• scissors
• heavy-duty snippers

Instructions:

1. Snip the spoons’ bowls from their stems using the snippers.
2. Paint the convex side of the spoons yellow and let dry.
3. Cut the bottle in half using the X-Acto knife, then remove the threaded mouth part from the top half.
4. Using the top half as a size guide, trace out some leaf shapes onto the green cardstock and cut them out.
5. Cut a hole in the center of the green shape that can fit over the opening at the top of the bottle.
6. Using hot glue, attach the painted spoons to the outside of the bottle by the remaining bit of stem. Work from the bottom up in an overlapping pattern, like scales.
7. When you get to the top, attach the green cardstock leaves.
8. Cut some separate strips of cardstock and attach just inside the bottle for a fuller look.
9. Place the whole thing on a the small lamp base. Make sure the plastic doesn’t touch the bulb, or use an LED light that doesn’t get hot to keep things safe.
